World Cup-You broke my heart and made me cry but I'll be back in four years

Butterflies-Sia [lyrics]
We've shared joy and we've shared pain
We've shared guilt and we've shared shame
We've bought into the stupid games
We've freed each other and we laid claim

(A shoe flies across the room and narrowly misses hitting Frank's ear. John is momentarily regretful for his action but he is too mad for it to last. "If you had just landed the damn ball in the net once. . ." Frank shook his head. "Right. Because you were perfect the whole time. God forbid John Terry should not be on his game for a moment. You're the one who got a second yellow card." John makes one last retort but neither of them remembers what it is because they're both up against the wall with mouths mashing against each other. They both still blame one another, but this will be okay for now.)

Speaking in Tongues-The Elms [lyrics]
People got a thing for the dangerous.
You'll find it inside the best of us.
Taking what they want like it's owed to them.
Other folks do the best they can…
Some of us do the best we can!

(In the stadium at Dortmund Lukas Podolski stared at the teammates that surrounded him and then at the Polish players on the other side of the field and for a moment he could not find the right words to say what he wanted to say.)

Ashes-Embrace [lyrics]
I've waited and given the chance again
I'd do it all the same but either way
I'm always out played up on your down days
I left in the right way to start again

(Clint reads what the critics say, and hears the reporters and he wishes he could answer the grand question of what they'll do differently in the future. He wants to reply that they'll fucking win, of course, but he doesn't, and it's not until he's back home that he realizes that he's not going to change things next time. He's just going to want it more.)

We Are-Ana [lyrics]
Lining up for the grand illusion
No answers for no questions asked
Lining up for the execution
Without knowing why

("They're killing us," Brian declares in the locker room at halftime. "We can still come back," Claudio insists, somewhat defiantly. Brian shook his head. "Not the Czechs. The fans.")

Three Lions [lyrics]
This is (I believe) the theme for English football.

The Beast and Dragon, Adored-Spoon [lyrics]
The beast and dragon, adored
You been gone so long
Where you been for so long
I went to places unknown
Rented a room
And I forgot my pen
Shook my twin
And I had to find the feelin again

Grey Ghost-Mike Doughty [lyrics]

Eanie Meanie-Jim Noir
If you don't give my football back I'm gonna get my dad on you
I only kicked it over the fence and broke a silly gnome or two

Have You Got It In You?-Imogen Heap [lyrics]
It takes a lot to be always en forme,
It takes a lot
I maybe not, all the time, all I’ve got
Maybe not

(Landon walked on the bus with a bent head and a heavy heart. He didn't have to be perfect all of the time; he was aware of that. It just would be nice to be perfect some of the time.)

Somewhere in Between-Lifehouse [lyrics]
I cant be losing sleep over this, no I can't
And now I can not stop pacing
Give me a few hours, I'll have all this sorted out
If my mind would just stop racing

(David doesn't sleep after the Paraguay game because he knows they can do better. His hotel room is littered with charts and stats and swears that if he has enough time, he'll figure out a way do things differently next time.)

Yellow-Coldplay [lyrics]
In honor of all of the yellow cards issued in the tournament. :)

So Long-Guster [lyrics]
I'm the villain and I should confess
I liked you better before
So long, so long and on to the next one
Go on and it won't be too soon
I'm gone, I'm gone, bet you saw this one coming?

(They're both silent on the phone because now they both know how it feels. Xabi can't say that he's sorry because deep down he's selfishly happy that he's not the only loser and Steven can't say that he's sorry because he's not even thinking about the fact that Xabi's been there. They just sit there, quietly, and wish that saying goodbye to Germany was not so inevitable.)

Imagine-John Lennon [lyrics]
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

(That random person on the other bench is going to become his enemy for the next 90 minutes. They will go from being two innocent people who love football to hated rivals who have to destroy one another for the sake of their country. It stops being a game, then, and starts to resemble war.)

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)-Green Day [lyrics]
It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

(Bastian nods with satisfaction as he stares at the medal hanging from his neck. "You know, this was fun. I don't think I care about coming back in four years because it can't get much better than this." Lukas laughed and slung an arm around his teammate's shoulder. "Basti, don't worry. We'll be at the next one.")

Who loves you? Can you guess? Well, I'll give you two hints... her username starts with a W.

All of these were just amazing. Points of interest:

Lamps/Terry--I think I've already told you what I thought about this one, but let me just repeat: I never thought that pairing would make me want to keyboard smash, but uh? Totally does.

Brian and Claudio in the locker room. Guh, that's so adorable--and why does it make me want to cry? Maybe because I never gave them enough support or faith or something. *sighs*

You know how I feel about Landon, but... I never really think about him as a person, just as a player, so just those two sentences really have done me in.

Becks, aw poor baby... *sighs again*

Guh, the one about the benched players is perfect, too. Bench/locker room/team politics fascinate me, and the fact that you don't identify any of the characters by name just makes it all the more universal. I might hate you for that.

And I think that I already commented on the Lukas/Basti one too, but: gkfdlkmg. I can't wait to see them together again.

I'm going to be mopey for a bit now, because really? Reading all of them, one after another, broke my heart just like the WC did. That's really fitting, oddly enough. You have my undying respect for that.

All of them have finished downloading now, YAY! I'm going to burn them on a CD for my trip (and to keep forever and ever, duh). Seriously? Thank you! ♥

I have four people on my flist who's username starts with "W." I wonder which one it is. . .

Writing JT/Lamps makes me want to keyboard mash, as does looking at pics of them, but I've never had a strong urge to read it.

I'm not entirely happy with the Brian and Claudio one, although I think that's because I couldn't quite make any of the matches fit like I wanted to.

The Landon one was written without any thought. I obviously wouldn't have chosen to do that intentionally.

The minute you suggested the Green Day song I thought of Poldi being at his first WC and probably having more fun than he's ever had. Then Basti became the one to say that in the fic, but I think it works well too.

The fics had to fit with the title of the mix anyway.
